3 Ways to Replace your Car Key

Adriana Rueda |

Have you ever lost your car keys and have a momentary panic before you could find them again? What if you lost them permanently, or had your car keys broken? Hopefully, you’ve never had to deal with a situation like this, but there’s always the possibility that it could happen. When this happens, you need a key replacement service like Locksmith Keyless in Miami. We’re a keysmith service that can help clients in need of a car key replacement, but there are a few important steps to this process, and a few different ways to go about it depending on the kind of key and your circumstances

The 3 Ways to Replace your Car Key

Replacing your car key has a few different steps to it depending on a few factors. First, there’s the difference between if you’re looking to replace an older, manual key, or a newer electronic one. If you’re in need of a new electronic key, is it because your current one isn’t lost, but is malfunctioning? There are some different steps if this is the case.

  • Manual Keys
    • If you need to replace a manual key, you’ll first want to locate and write down your car’s VIN number. There are a few different places this can be, but it’s usually on the dashboard. You can also find it on your car’s insurance information on the top left corner of every page. You’ll also want to write down the year, make, and model of your car if you don’t know it by heart. You can bring this info to a locksmith so that they can help you replace it and reprogram the replacement key. You might also be able to find a used replacement through an online vendor like eBay, but this isn’t as reliable, and some cars may need special equipment to cut and reprogram the key that only a locksmith will have.
  • Electronic Keys
    • Some newer cars may only have their keys replace-able through their manufacturer, in which you can potentially have a warranty on the key. If this is not the case, a locksmith can still help and potentially be cheaper. Your key might still need a new transponder which you’ll need to buy through the locksmith. Again, you can try finding one online for a cheaper price, but you’ll still need to cut and reprogram the key at a locksmith. You can also try your local car dealer for your car’s make.
  • Malfunctioning Keys
    • If your key isn’t working, you may want to try replacing the battery first. You can also try resetting your keys, using the instruction manual to do so. If you need to reprogram the key, you can do this on your own, but a locksmith may be a lot easier.
